Homemade wind power may sound like a fictitious dish prepared by grandma, but its actually quite simple and easy to create a wind turbine at home and use it to power said home. Unlike solar panels which are incredibly expensive a homemade wind mill can cost less than a hundred dollars and be assembled in a weekend.
The most difficult part of making homemade wind power is assembling a strong enough axel and rotor. These parts need to be robust enough to withstand the worst weather and are some of the only parts that cannot be found premade at a hardware store. Luckily the same mechanics who resurface brake rotors can often fashion a high quality rotor for much less than getting one made any other way.
Homemade wind power plants are typically less than 1000 watt systems, but larger ones can easily be built. The amount of money that can be saved depends on the size of the system, but many people have gone completely off the grid by using multiple wind turbines as well as solar power. Since it is not always windy batteries have to be used to store the energy, but these can also be found cheaply. Many people simply reuse old car, boat, or RV batteries.
