Household Wind Power

Wind power has not typically been used on a household basis, but rather as part of larger commercial systems. However, household wind power is coming into its own, especially as wind turbine technology continues to develop.

Some basic advice in installing a turbine for household wind power is to first check local home ordinances before investing in one. There have been instances of neighbors complaining about the noise, though again, today's turbines are designed to be quieter than those of the past. Installation costs vary, but start to pay for themselves within several years in many cases—though this will depend on the area in which you live.

Some household wind power systems are designed to store excess wind energy in batteries, but most are not designed to do this. Instead, the excess generated power is sold to the utility company. A house located in an area with high wind speeds will of course generate more electricity than a house with low wind speeds.
