Wind Generator Maintenance

Nothing lasts forever. Anything that has moving parts, from automobiles to industrial machinery, will inevitably need regular maintenance and upkeep in order to operate efficiently over the long haul. Wind turbines are no different, and as such, wind generator maintenance should be factored into any decision to purchase and install one of these machines.

Most experts agree that the average lifespan of a wind turbine is roughly 20-25 years. During this time, these turbines will be in almost continuous use, usually amassing well over 100,000 hours of service. Because these machines are in nearly continuous motion, wind generator maintenance and repair is going to be necessary from time to time. And the key to avoiding major repair work is to make sure that they are regularly serviced and any minor repairs are done the instant they are required.

Nobody purchases an automobile with the thought that they will never need to fix or maintain the vehicle. In fact, anything that contains moving parts is prone to failure at some point. This is why many people will figure in the cost of maintenance as well as the purchasing price when looking for a new car. The same mentality should be adopted when looking to install a residential wind turbine. The cost of parts, as well as labor, should be carefully considered before making the purchase. If you're good with your hands and trust your mechanical prowess, wind generator maintenance and labor costs can be significantly reduced by performing any repairs on your own. However, in order for this to be feasible, it is vital that you take the time to learn how every part of the turbine works, and what is required to fix them.

Wind turbine design hasn't changed much over the last few decades, but the materials used to manufacturer them has been improved. The life of a turbine has been improved through the use of high-tech alloys and superior bushing materials, which has resulted in a less intensive need for continuous wind generator maintenance. This is not to say that maintenance will not be required, but it does mean that the necessary upkeep can be less frequent. Components such as bearings will undoubtedly need to be replaced at some point, and occasional coats of paint will be needed to lessen the effects of weathering.

The cost of wind generator maintenance can be a concern for those that wish to install a turbine on their property. As a general rule of thumb, most experts suggest that the annual cost of maintenance will be approximately one percent of the cost of the turbine, every year. This means that if you pay $20,000 for a wind turbine, you can expect an annual maintenance cost of about $200. This maintenance cost is relatively minimal, considering that the electricity generated by these machines is completely free of charge. While most people pay close to that every month for power, $200 per year is a significant savings. This is one of the greatest advantages of owning your own wind turbine.
