Wind Generators

Wind generators are becoming a popular way to produce clean, sustainable electricity at a relatively low cost. They are especially common in rural areas, where a connection to a community grid might be hard to come by. In recent years, these generators have really come into their own thanks to the quickly rising popularity of wind farms. However, when it comes to single-unit, residential wind turbines, there are a number of factors to consider.

When it comes to wind generators, it's all about location, location, and of course, location. A wind turbine is only as strong as the wind that blows across the blades. Almost every part of the world experiences wind to some degree, but in order for a wind generator to operate efficiently, a minimum wind speed is required. Regional wind speeds are categorized by classes, which generally correspond to the needs of different types of turbines. The easiest way to determine what class of wind speed is typical for your region is to visit the United States Department of Energy website and consult their wind energy map. This will give you an idea of the feasibility of installing your own wind generator.

Local regulations should be carefully considered before installing any wind generators for your home. In order for a wind turbine to work properly, it generally has to be built so that it is taller than any surrounding structures in order to catch enough wind. Unfortunately, many municipalities have rules that ban such structures within city limits. In addition, many housing associations have specific rules and regulations for specific neighborhoods. These rules must also be taken into consideration. Discovering all of the rules and regulations will inevitably take some degree of research, but it is essential for the long term viability of such a project.

Because they require no outside source of power in order to work, wind generators can be used nearly anywhere that there is an adequate amount of wind. They are the ideal solution for those that have a remote vacation cabin that cannot be connected to a community grid. Smaller versions can be used for camping, as a means of generating just enough power to run small electrically powered lanterns and for charging batteries. Many people use small wind turbines to help generate power on boats as well. These are especially effective because there is almost always adequate wind when at sea, and these small generators can be easily mounted to nearly any part of the boat.

The many benefits of using wind generators are making them more and more popular with people all over the world. For some people, the fact that they are capable of generating usable electricity' and do so for free (once installed), is one of their best selling points. Yet, for a majority of people the main benefit is that wind turbines produce clean, reliable, and sustainable energy without any of the adverse effects that are often associated with fossil fuels. They produce no byproducts whatsoever, and are capable of producing substantial amounts of electricity.
