Windmill Parts

A windmill is different than a wind turbine, and as such windmill parts are a bit different as well. The primary difference between a windmill and a wind turbine is that a windmill uses wind power to generate mechanical energy, whereas a wind turbine creates electricity. Windmills have been used for centuries for many different applications.

Windmill parts can vary slightly depending on what the windmill is designed to do. There are however, parts that are common to every windmill. Blades, a tower and gearbox are just some of the basic parts that can be found on virtually every windmill.

Windmill parts work together to accomplish a specific task. As the wind turns the blades (sometimes called vanes), they turn a shaft that travels down the length of the tower. At the bottom of the tower is of a gear box that transfers this shaft rotation to create the mechanical energy needed to do any number of jobs, from grinding grain to pumping water.
